Let’s face it, loving ourselves isn’t always easy. We tend to be our own biggest critics and can be quick to point out our negative flaws. However, although tough at times, the relationship you have with yourself is one of the most important. In honor of Self-Improvement Month, taking place in September, we’re sharing a few tips on how to feel great in the skin you’re in. Keep reading to learn how you can embrace your body for what it is and work on strengthening a relationship with yourself.

1. Recite Positive Affirmations

At some point, every one of us has looked in the mirror and been unhappy with the reflection staring back at us. It’s easy to fall into the habit of pointing out the things or areas you don’t like about yourself. Maybe you’ve gained a few pounds in the past year or your skin has broken out more than normal. Putting yourself down is not going to allow you to feel better or fix the situation at hand. However, reciting a positive affirmation or two each day can not only lead you to realize you have plenty of amazing attributes but also aide in helping to find a solution to work on the flaws that are troubling you. For example, if you’ve been under a lot of stress lately and your skin is breaking out or you’ve gained a few pounds, rather than putting yourself down, come up with a plan to better manage these feelings. A great way to work through the stress life can bring is to develop an exercise routine. Everyone needs a little help once in a while and accepting it will only help you to gain the confidence you need to feel great in your own skin.

2. Stop Comparing Yourself

These days, outlets like social media and the press certainly have a way of making us feel like we’re not pretty enough, we’re not thin enough, we’re not fit enough, or we’re just plain not good enough. One of the worst things you can do for your self-esteem is to compare yourself to anyone else. Whether it be the celebrities you see on TV or the person in line behind you at the grocery store, everyone is unique in their own way, flaws and all. While this may be one of the hardest habits to break, it is crucial if you want to achieve positive thoughts about your body. First and foremost, don’t knock others down. It doesn’t seem that this would be important to your own success, however, criticizing others can be masked as a way to make ourselves feel better rather than addressing our own issues. Try to remember that you’re on a journey and there may be many bumps in the road. Don’t look at these bumps as competition or setbacks, but rather opportunities to learn and grow in order to become more familiar with ourselves. Accept that imperfection is okay and actually pretty common. No one is perfect, no matter how great their lives might look on social media. Everyone is fighting a battle we have no idea about, so keep that in mind and be kind always.

3. Remember All Your Body Can Do

Our bodies are capable of so many amazing things and often times we forget that. It’s important that we recognize and appreciate what each square inch of our bodies can do and how we can keep them operating happy and healthy for many years to come. If you’re down about some extra stretch marks after having a baby, remind yourself that you carried another life around for nine months and fought with all your might to make sure that life arrived safely into this world. Nobody else on this earth has your body or can do what you do with it and that alone is something so powerful in itself. In order to keep your body in good standing, it’s important that you provide it with proper nutrition and exercise. These become more and more vital as you navigate through the aging process. Participating in activities like hot yoga classes will not only keep you at a healthy weight in order to allow your body to continue doing the amazing things it’s capable of but also center you spiritually and reduce stress. These are all factors in loving yourself for who you are and who you will become in the future.

Your body is your temple and that is exactly how it should be treated. It’s easy to get down on yourself, especially when it comes to physical appearance. If you live your life always focusing on the negative, it’s likely that is the type of energy that will surround you. Practicing the tips above in combination with finding what works for you can help you to lead a positive life full of more self-love and less self-hate.
